The preferred habitat of Isla Mocha, considered as a territory whose diversity is one of the purest in the world, contains 2182 acres of unique forest in the world, source of many studies of flora and fauna in an area that since 1988 is National Reserve, administered by the Chilean National Forestry Corporation CONAF (by its initials in spanish Corporación National Forestal de Chile).
Depending on the distance between the coastal and mountainous land of the island it is possible to see various native species, where differences in height and humidity are part of the ecosystem on the island.
While climbing in altitude, the vegetation has a significant increase in both density and diversity, between 100 and 300 meters are species like Olivillos, Myrtle, Ulmos, Lumas, Laureles, Tepas, Canelos and Lingen.
The fauna of the island, rich in marine diversity, has varieties of fish as flounder, croaker and Roundwood among others. It has even been partially repopulated marine mammals such as sea lion and new species of whales that have begun to visit the coasts of the island, both brutally killed in the past.
No doubt the birds on Isla Mocha gathers the largest number of species, some endemic as Chucao, Thrush, Churrin of Mocha, Hued Hued, Rayadito and Pilpen.
Seabirds are also found near the coast as the Imperial Cormorant and White Petrel, the latter of few worldwide that nest on the island within wooded mountains, in caves at the foot of tree species like Myrtle, Olivillos and Laureles.
